Understanding prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. It often develops slowly, so you may not have symptoms for many years. It affects 1 in 8 men during their lifetime.

Early detection can greatly improve the chances of successful treatment.

Why early detection matters

Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening but catching it early can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment and cure. Early detection is the best way to stay ahead of the disease.

Who should consider having a PSA test?

Certain groups of men are at higher risk for prostate cancer, and we’re contacting them directly. If you’re in one of these at-risk groups, we have already pre-booked your PSA test. The following groups are considered at higher risk:

  • Men over 50 years old
  • Men with a family history of prostate cancer
  • Afro-Caribbean men (1 in 4 are at higher risk)
  • Asian men
  • Caucasian men

What is a PSA test?

The PSA test is a simple blood test that measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. High PSA levels can indicate a prostate condition. The test is also recommended if you have symptoms like frequent urination, blood in your urine, or erection problems.

How to book your PSA test

We are sending SMS messages to patients in at-risk groups with a link to book their PSA test online. Simply follow the link to schedule your appointment. If you can't book online, please call us at 01536 204 154 after 10am.

If you have used the Prostate Cancer UK risk checker and have been identified as at risk, or if you are in one of the mentioned at-risk groups but haven’t received a message, please get in touch with us to arrange your PSA test.

Three of our GPs have recorded a video where they talk about the importance of having a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test to try and detect prostate cancer early.
